About Grandpa Rob
A Real Grandpa!
I became a grandfather in January, 2020, with the birth of Kairo. Then, in November of 2021, Gigi was born. Being able to spend time with them is a special gift that I truly cherish.
In 2023, Grandma Kim had an idea that I could do a YouTube channel called "Grandpa Rob" to create fun, educational videos for our grandkids. Then we soon expanded that idea to the concept of making videos for ALL kids. We published our first ever video in October, 2023, and we've been at it ever since.
We make these videos together from the perspective of being grandparents. We try to promote having fun and learning at the same time.
It has given us great joy to see our grandkids watch our videos and have fun while learning. It is also extremely gratifying to hear from parents who tell us that their kids enjoy watching, too.
I think it's a great honor to be on the screen entertaining kids and it's a big responsibility to make good content. We try to make videos that will hopefully make the world a better place.
Our Videos
We make a variety of videos for children around the world. We started by making videos designed for 2 to 5 year olds to learn the basics, such as the English alphabet, common words, colors, numbers, and shapes. We also think Storytime is important for kids, and we make read-aloud videos of books we enjoy. Our goal for the read-aloud videos is to entertain with an interesting reading of the text, fun sounds, sometimes animation, and also to offer an additional educational component.
We also plan to add videos designed to teach kids kindness and manners. Another one of our goals is it to make content that will supplement and enhance the education of kids from grades K-5.
The common thread of our content is teaching things that every child should know, in a fun, positive, and encouraging way. We hope that kids will feel nurtured and inspired by our videos. We also hope that our videos will be a resource for parents and teachers.
Our videos might look and feel different than other kids' content. We have a different vibe. We are not teachers or musicians. We're just grandparents.
Our Experience
Grandma Kim and I have a blended family with five adult children between us, who are all good people whom we are proud of. We're not teachers, and we don't pretend to be. We're parents and grandparents with many years of life experiences. We have made mistakes along the way and we continue to grow and learn.
I think Grandma Kim is the real brains behind this operation. Without a doubt, the "Grandpa Rob" channel is as much her vision as it is mine. Grandma Kim comes up many of the ideas in the videos. For example, the original A - Z video series was her idea. For that series, she outlined each video and picked the music and dance clips because she wanted kids to have something fun to dance to. I film and edit the videos myself (except for the Letter C video, which we experimented by having someone else edit). For me, each video is an attempt at making art.
Some people might be interested to know our educational and work backgrounds. My educational background is that I have a Bachelor's degree in English and a law degree. I've been a lawyer for over 30 years. In 2023, I started acting, and I did some community theatre and short films. Once upon a time, Grandma Kim worked as a talent agent. So when it comes to entertainment, she is part fan, part critic, and part businessperson. She is very interested in style, design and aesthetics, which she often imprints onto the videos.
In making these videos, we have learned to work together and try to make each video a little bit better than the last one.
